This week’s LIV Golf event in Indianapolis marks the climax of the 2026 campaign and the end of the current setup of the breakaway circuit. The future of LIV Golf remains unclear, with potential doubts about whether Indianapolis could be its final destination.
Financial issues rather than golf dominate discussions as the tournament approaches. In Indianapolis, the focus is on alleged missed vendor payments and a pending lawsuit involving Fresh Tape Media. Earlier in the week, Fresh Tape Media filed a lawsuit against LIV Golf for unpaid dues related to preseason media day production. Jared Kleinstein, Fresh Tape’s founder, publicly criticized LIV on social media, emphasizing that small businesses deserve timely payments for their work.
LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil addressed these issues at a press conference in Indianapolis. When questioned about Kleinstein’s claims and the missed payments, O’Neil acknowledged the challenges, stating, “I come from a family of entrepreneurs and understand these difficulties. We are working diligently to resolve these matters and fulfill our commitments.” He expressed hope for the financial situation but underscored the evolving nature of the business.
Reports indicate that Fresh Tape Media is suing LIV Golf for $1.2 million, including interest, highlighting concerns that LIV Golf might be out of funds. In April, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced it would cease funding the league after 2026. As a result, LIV canceled the Team Championship in Michigan, moved the season finale to Indianapolis, and reduced the event’s individual purse from $20 million to $10.1 million.
Despite these challenges, O’Neil mentioned securing an unnamed investor to support LIV Golf into 2027. Details of this investor remain undisclosed. The circuit’s future plan, titled ‘LIV 2.0,’ involves players holding a majority of equity, with a schedule of 10 tournaments split between the United States and global locations.
