Lucas Glover Explains Shoe Removal Incident at 3M Open

During the final round of the 3M Open, former U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover drew attention when he removed his shoes after sinking a 10-foot birdie putt on the 10th hole. Instead of immediately picking up his golf ball, he walked to the edge of the green, slipped off his shoes, and then collected the ball. This move surprised many observers.

Some speculated that Glover’s actions were a statement against the AimPoint green-reading system, a technique employed by many golfers today. Glover, however, clarified that his actions were not a protest. Rather, he aimed to be considerate of the golfers following him.

The PGA Tour later explained that Glover was asked to be cautious about the spike marks he left on the greens, as he wears metal spikes. By removing his shoes, he aimed to minimize damage around the hole.

Lucas Glover shared his thoughts on Instagram, stating, “For 23 years on the PGA Tour, I’ve worn spikes. This was the first time I’ve faced a complaint. I took my shoes off to retrieve my ball without leaving marks, respecting the request made during the round.”

Glover emphasized that he did his best to mitigate any damage by tapping down the spike marks. He voiced his frustration over the focus on this minor issue rather than the tournament itself.

Glover plans to continue wearing metal spikes and expressed his expectation that followers can address any marks made on the greens. He humorously reiterated that tapping down spike marks is allowed, an allowance introduced in recent years to aid course maintenance.
