United Airlines Flight Diverted Due to Unruly Passenger
A United Airlines flight en route from Chicago to Minneapolis made an unexpected stop in Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday night. The diversion aimed to handle an unruly passenger, according to airline officials.
An airline spokesperson stated, “United flight 2005 from Chicago to Minneapolis landed safely in Madison, Wisconsin to address a security concern with an unruly passenger.”
Law enforcement acted swiftly, restraining the passenger during the flight. Carrie Springer, spokesperson for the Dane County Regional Airport, confirmed deputies from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office met the plane upon landing in Madison. The passenger was then removed from the aircraft.
Federal authorities are now investigating the incident. Air traffic control communications, reviewed by The Associated Press, revealed that an aircraft crew member informed controllers that law enforcement officers on board took some time to subdue the passenger.
The Boeing 737 carried 147 passengers and six crew members at the time. The airline reported no injuries during this event.
Passenger Mike Rundle shared his experience with The Associated Press. He noted that the individual in question appeared to be in his 70s and seemed confused. Rundle mentioned that the man stood up while the plane was on the runway in Chicago. Flight attendants instructed him to sit down and sought a Russian-speaking individual over the intercom.
Later, Rundle heard a commotion involving the same passenger being escorted back to his seat. Though Rundle didn’t clearly see the events unfold, a nearby passenger mentioned witnessing the man “reach” for a flight attendant. Several individuals reportedly restrained him.
The passenger thereafter remained seated quietly for the rest of the flight. In Madison, the authorities handcuffed and removed him from the plane.
“The general vibes were calm, and the flight crew did a great job handling everything,” Rundle stated. The flight resumed and reached Minneapolis early the following morning.
