Maya Rudolph, known for her distinctive comedic flair, makes her Broadway debut in “Oh, Mary!” This production allows Rudolph to showcase her talent as an outlandish Mary Todd Lincoln.
The play reimagines the historical figure with a humorous twist. Mrs. Lincoln is portrayed as a self-centered, alcohol-loving, aspiring cabaret singer. She dreams of fame while feeling constrained by her husband, Abraham.
Rudolph’s ability to dive into slapstick humor shines through her physical comedy and expressive facial gestures, often eliciting hearty laughter from the audience. Sam Pinkleton, the play’s director, commends her stage presence. He describes her as a natural, adept at engaging with the audience.
“Oh, Mary!” is tailored to Rudolph’s comedic skills. She comfortably embraces humor that leans towards the absurd. As she describes it, the comedy is “so dumb” yet brilliant, creating a cozy atmosphere for her.
Rudolph is not the first to step into Mary Todd Lincoln’s shoes in this production. She follows a line of performers who have brought the character to life, including Cole Escola, Betty Gilpin, Tituss Burgess, Jinkx Monsoon, Hannah Solow, Jane Krakowski, and John Cameron Mitchell. Joining in late April, Rudolph extended her role through July 5 after a mere 10 days of rehearsal.
