In Kansas City, Lionel Messi used his white-and-blue jersey to wipe away tears after leading Argentina to an early lead over Algeria in their World Cup opener. Despite concerns about his hamstring injury, Messi scored three times, quelling doubts about Argentina’s ability to win consecutive World Cups as Messi approaches his 39th birthday. His performance tied Germany’s Miroslav Klose for the tournament’s career scoring record.
“My tears after the first goal were not about football,” Messi explained, choosing not to elaborate further. Instead, he thanked his teammates, coaching staff, and delegation for their support.
Messi’s first goal came early, assisted by Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul. He scored again on a rebound in the second half and completed the hat trick with a precise strike before being subbed out to applause from 69,045 fans favoring Argentina. Coach Lionel Scaloni praised Messi as “incredible.”
Messi’s Legacy in World Cup History
Messi marked his 20th anniversary of World Cup play, becoming the second player to score in five editions of the tournament. With 16 goals in six World Cup appearances, he is expected to surpass Klose’s record soon. This hat trick was the 61st of his career, his 11th for his national team, and his first in a World Cup.
“I’m very happy and grateful for this wonderful group,” Messi stated. “This is the cherry on top.”
His achievements overshadowed performances by stars like Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, both of whom scored twice in their respective matches on the same day.
Overcoming Injury, Messi Leads Argentina
Despite dealing with a hamstring issue while playing for Inter Miami, Messi appeared unfazed in the lead-up to the World Cup. He demonstrated his fitness by scoring on a penalty against Iceland in a warm-up match.
“This is my sixth World Cup, and I feel in good shape,” Messi noted. “It’s essential to start the tournament with a win.”
His appearance against Algeria marked his 200th international match since starting his career in 2005 at age 18. Only Cristiano Ronaldo and Bader al-Mutawa have more international appearances. Messi and Ronaldo stand as the only players to score in five World Cups.
Vladimir Petkovic, Algeria’s coach, acknowledged Messi’s skill, noting the Argentine team works for and supports Messi’s talents.
Fans in Kansas City Celebrate Messi
The Kansas City metro area serves as the base for four national teams, including Argentina. Messi’s presence has captivated fans locally, much like around the world. On match day, thousands adorned in Messi’s No. 10 jerseys attended the game at the Chiefs’ stadium. At a watch party downtown, a goat donned an Argentina jersey, adding humor to the event before Messi scored, further cementing his status as soccer’s GOAT, or greatest of all time.
Rodrigo De Paul emphasized Messi’s influence, stating, “He doesn’t care about individual records; he prioritizes the group.”
