NASA’s Artemis III Mission Crew and Implications
NASA is preparing its upcoming mission to return humans to the moon, with an all-male crew for Artemis III. Among the four astronauts are experienced astronauts and a backup from the Artemis II mission.
The crew consists of Commander Randy Bresnik, Pilot Luca Parmitano from the European Space Agency, and mission specialists Frank Rubio and Andre Douglas. The mission is planned for June 9, 2026.
Artemis II, launched in April, was notable for diversity. The mission included Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. Glover was the first Black astronaut to travel near the moon, and Koch was the first woman to do so. Hansen was the first Canadian to be included in the mission.
For Artemis III, NASA has selected Randy Bresnik, Luca Parmitano, Frank Rubio, and Andre Douglas. Andre Douglas is Black, Frank Rubio is of Salvadoran descent, and Luca Parmitano is the first representative from the European Space Agency to join an Artemis mission.
NASA administrator Jared Isaacman addressed questions about the all-male crew at a media briefing. He stated that the best astronauts are chosen for the mission’s objectives. While NASA’s previous astronaut class included more women than men, the Artemis III team does not include women despite earlier commitments.
NASA had previously pledged to include a woman, a person of color, and a non-American astronaut in lunar missions. However, references to this commitment were removed from the NASA website after a federal crackdown on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in 2025 under the Trump administration.
