NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed strong support for President Donald Trump’s actions regarding Iran, emphasizing their importance for the security of NATO allies. Rutte addressed Trump’s dissatisfaction with the perceived lack of support from NATO members during an appearance on “Special Report.”
“The president is taking necessary measures to curb Iran’s nuclear capabilities,” Rutte stated. He questioned the consequences of Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon, highlighting the nation’s role as a source of chaos and terrorism, which would have severe implications for global security.
“This is an exporter of chaos. It is an exporter of terrorism,” Rutte remarked. “It would be devastating for the region. It would be devastating for the whole world.”
These comments followed Trump’s recent critical remarks about NATO, which reflected ongoing tensions between the alliance and the White House. At a NATO summit in The Hague, Trump pointed out the imbalance in defense spending within NATO, criticizing member nations for not reciprocating support.
“The numbers that we spend are so crazy on NATO, and they weren’t there for us,” Trump said.
Rutte acknowledged Trump’s concerns but clarified that NATO allies have offered their military resources to support the U.S. in conflicts, including the situation with Iran. For example, during Operation Epic Fury, U.S. planes relied heavily on Italian bases, with Bucharest reducing commercial flights to accommodate tanker facilities for U.S. forces.
Rutte also mentioned ongoing support from European allies in protecting the Strait of Hormuz, with efforts like asset pre-positioning for demining operations.
According to Rutte, Trump’s approach has strengthened NATO and increased defense investments. He praised Trump’s influence in encouraging NATO countries to boost their defense spending, noting significant impacts on the defense industry.
“When you look at the numbers of the investments NATO countries are now making in their own defense, it is staggering,” Rutte commented.
He highlighted Trump’s “historic peace agreement” with Iran as a symbol of successful leadership and reiterated the importance of such initiatives for alliance security.
Rutte, affirming his full support for Trump, plans to meet with the president to discuss further strategies, underscoring the need for continued leadership to ensure collective safety.
