About a month ago, Arch Manning from Texas Longhorns and Dante Moore from Oregon Ducks seemed certain to be the first and second overall picks in the 2027 NFL draft. However, recent developments have shifted their standing significantly.
Analysts Rethink Top Draft Picks
According to NFL draft analysts, like ESPN’s Mel Kiper, neither Manning nor Moore is predicted to be in the top ten picks anymore. Kiper, widely regarded as a leading authority in NFL draft analysis, included them in his 2027 draft big board where both just barely made the top-25 list. Surprisingly, neither player is among Kiper’s top five quarterbacks.
Here are Kiper’s top-ranked quarterbacks:
- Drew Mestemaker, Oklahoma State
- Darian Mensah, Miami
- Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss
- CJ Carr, Notre Dame
- Austin Simmons, Missouri
Performance Analysis
Manning, ranked as the sixth-best quarterback, remains in the top 25 due to his strong skill set. Kiper explained, “He possesses the size, mobility, and arm strength desirable for an NFL franchise quarterback. He shows capability in making throws on the move and provides a running threat with 10 rushing touchdowns last season.”
However, Manning’s inconsistency, particularly with accuracy and decision-making, poses a challenge for teams evaluating him. Observers experience admiration for his potential followed by doubts about his ability to improve. Despite showing progress in accuracy this season, it requires further enhancement.
Manning’s fluctuating performance has cast doubt on his potential, especially when facing average college teams.
Moore’s slide in rankings is linked to a concussion he sustained against USC rather than his on-field abilities. In his appearances this season, Moore boasts a 69.7% completion rate with 926 yards, nine touchdowns, and no interceptions.
Potential Recovery
If Moore returns and excels in the rest of the season, particularly during the College Football Playoff, he might still secure a spot in the top 15 picks.
Kiper noted Moore’s strengths, highlighting his varied arm angles, mechanical soundness, accurate ball placement, and skillful deep passes. His throws carry an effortless quality due to his notable arm strength and ability to strike while on the move.
Moore needs to demonstrate the ability to dominate in high-stakes games. Although his exceptional 2025 performance against Penn State showed promise, he was unable to replicate it against other formidable teams in subsequent matches.
