The Edmonton Oilers are taking significant steps to secure a Stanley Cup victory before their star players, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, potentially decide to leave. Their consideration of hiring Mike Babcock as head coach is raising eyebrows due to his controversial past.
Mike Babcock resigned as head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2023 after accusations of inappropriate conduct directed toward players emerged. This news has sparked outrage among Oilers fans, who have taken to social media to protest the decision.
Further complicating the issue, TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that if Babcock is hired, the NHL will first conduct an investigation. The NHL Players’ Association has requested an inquiry into claims that Babcock violated players’ privacy during his time in Columbus.
“The NHLPA has asked the NHL to move forward with an investigation into the allegations Mike Babcock invaded players’ privacy during his time in Columbus,” Dreger stated.
Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic adds that the NHL is waiting for the Oilers’ decision. If Edmonton proceeds with hiring Babcock, they must prepare for the league’s investigation. This step could decide whether Babcock joins the Oilers, as potential league penalties may apply.
Babcock’s coaching history includes several contentious tactics. He reportedly bullied Detroit Red Wings player Johan Franzen, causing a nervous breakdown. He was also criticized for asking Mitch Marner to rank teammates by effort level and benching players like Mike Modano and Mike Commodore due to personal issues.
The investigation outcome may influence the Oilers’ final decision on hiring Babcock. Potential disciplinary actions from the NHL could delay or prevent his start in Edmonton.
