Patriot Front Marches in Washington Amid Independence Day Celebrations
A large group of masked members of the white nationalist organization Patriot Front marched through Washington, D.C. on Saturday, coinciding with the nationwide celebrations of the United States’ 250th anniversary. The group struck a discordant note as massive crowds gathered for the festivities.
Videos and photos shared on social media depicted dozens of men marching in formation near Union Station and other key areas of the city. The participants wore uniform navy-blue shirts, khaki pants, tan baseball caps, sunglasses, and white face coverings. They carried American flags, Confederate flags, and various banners.
The demonstration occurred amidst sprawling Independence Day festivities, including military displays, parades, concerts, and a record-setting fireworks display on the National Mall. Throughout these events, hundreds of thousands of visitors came to Washington to partake in America’s semiquincentennial celebration.
In an email to Newsweek, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) confirmed that it was “tracking First Amendment activities that occurred this morning in the Eastern Market neighborhood.”
The MPD stressed the importance of balancing rights to peaceful expression with public safety and security for D.C. residents and visitors. No arrests were reported.
Understanding Patriot Front
Patriot Front is classified by civil rights organizations and extremism researchers as a white supremacist and neo-fascist group. According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the group promotes the ideology that America belongs exclusively to descendants of European settlers.
Patriot Front is known for orchestrating highly choreographed flash demonstrations that are often unannounced. It encourages nonviolent disobedience, urging members to occupy public spaces to “promote patriotic politics and combat anti-national messaging,” as stated on its website.
Formed in late 2017, the group emerged from a split with another neo-fascist group, Vanguard America, following the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) identifies Patriot Front as one of the most active white nationalist groups in the country, largely driven by its propaganda efforts and flash marches.
Documents obtained by USA Today revealed that Patriot Front had over 540 members across almost all states as of early 2026. The organization’s Texas-based 72-page member roster shows that it gained half of its members within the past two years and maintains ties with numerous Active Clubs, which combine mixed martial arts with propaganda in fight clubs nationwide.
Thomas Ryan Rousseau, Patriot Front’s founder, urged members to stay fit and distribute supremacist propaganda. He expressed the group’s ambition to recruit 600 members by July 4 in alignment with the nation’s 250th anniversary.
“This is a picked band of dedicated men that far exceeds any of our domestic contemporaries,” Rousseau wrote to members. “These teams need dedicated members. Men willing to work for the cause and not just fight for it.”
Attempts to reach Rousseau or solicit a comment from Patriot Front were unsuccessful.
A History in Washington
Saturday’s march continues a trend of Patriot Front demonstrations in Washington, D.C., and nearby areas. The group has previously integrated itself into major city events, including the annual March for Life.
In May 2023, around 150 members marched through downtown Washington carrying shields, flags, and banners. Similarly, in May of this year, the group held an unannounced march in Virginia Beach, which was met with criticism from local officials and residents.
Throughout the Saturday march, group members continued their procession under law enforcement surveillance before dispersing, as Independence Day celebrations drew large crowds to the downtown area.
