The Philadelphia Phillies experienced a remarkable turnaround following manager Rob Thomson’s dismissal, highlighted by an extraordinary performance from key players Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. Schwarber made headlines by hitting three home runs, including two during the third inning, while Harper achieved his first career cycle, adding yet another significant milestone to his illustrious career.
Philadelphia dominated the New York Mets with a commanding 15-3 victory on Saturday. This offensive display was driven by Schwarber and Harper, both regarded as prominent figures in baseball. Schwarber’s debut home run traveled 456 feet, with his subsequent third-inning homer measuring 457 feet off Mets reliever Cionel Pérez. He rounded off his night with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, bringing his major league-leading home run total to 28. The performance marked Schwarber’s fifth three-homer game.
Cristopher Sanchez contributed to the Phillies’ success by allowing just one earned run over six innings, reducing his ERA to 1.80. He continued his streak of 23 consecutive starts at Citizens Bank Park, where he has allowed two earned runs or fewer. This streak places him second in MLB history for such starts at a single ballpark since 1913, right behind Jacob deGrom’s 24 starts at Citi Field.
Schwarber joined 66 other players as the second this season to hit multiple home runs in an inning, joining Yordan Alvarez from the Houston Astros. He became the fourth Phillies player to accomplish this, alongside Trea Turner, Von Hayes, and Andy Seminick.
In addition to Schwarber’s performance, Harper started the game with a solo home run, his 16th of the season. He also doubled and singled in the third inning, then hit a two-run triple in the fifth, completing the cycle. Harper’s cycle marked the 11th occurrence in the history of the Phillies.
The Mets and Phillies are set to conclude their three-game series on Sunday evening, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:20 p.m. ET.
