Authorities in Brazil are considering charges against three men following the death of a 21-year-old woman during a rope-jumping event. Investigators revealed that Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas died after being launched from a bridge without safety ropes attached.
Rodrigues de Freitas, a student, died at an abandoned bridge approximately 90 miles northwest of São Paulo. Police investigator Andrea Levy stated that the instructors admitted the safety ropes were not secured to her before the jump. The instructors reportedly could not recall who was responsible for the safety checks or whether they had forgotten to secure the ropes.
The incident occurred at the Ponte do Esqueleto, known as “Skeleton Bridge,” and the instructors face possible charges of homicide with “eventual intent.” This legal concept applies when an individual accepts the risk that their actions could result in death.
Investigators noted Rodrigues de Freitas requested a jump “airplane style,” in which two instructors lifted her above their shoulders, allowing her to stretch out her arms. A video shared online shows this style before the fatal fall. While the instructors wore harnesses connected to safety lines, they failed to secure Rodrigues de Freitas.
The fall was estimated at approximately 130 feet. Brazilian media reports indicated that Rodrigues de Freitas had purchased a guided hiking excursion that included this rope jump.
Rope jumping differs from traditional bungee jumping. It uses non-elastic, low-stretch climbing ropes that create a pendulum-like movement instead of a vertical bounce.
Rodrigues de Freitas was identified by the City of Limeira as a resident of Jandira. Officials expressed condolences to her family through a statement.
Local police are treating the incident as a homicide and are investigating whether the group conducting the rope jump was authorized to operate at the site. Levy suggested that oversight in validating the safety rope placement was a contributing factor in the tragedy.
The three instructors’ attorneys claimed their clients were experienced in conducting rope jumping activities and noted this was the first fatal incident in their years of operation.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the safety failure and who was in charge of verifying the security of participants before jumping.
