Savannah Guthrie’s Mother Missing in Arizona
Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1. Authorities suspect she was forcibly taken. The case may involve a violent crime linked to cryptocurrency known as a “wrench attack.”
Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer noted the resemblance between Guthrie’s disappearance and these criminal tactics. Victims often face physical threats or abduction to gain access to cryptocurrency assets. Although no suspects have been named, authorities believe they understand the motive.
Possible Connection to Scottsdale Incident
Coffindaffer suggested this case might connect to a February 1 home invasion in Scottsdale, targeting cryptocurrency assets. She had mentioned this possibility since March, seeing the wrench attack as a plausible factor. Attackers often target individuals wealthy in cryptocurrency, or those linked to them.
Understanding Wrench Attacks
A wrench attack involves using intimidation or physical force to make someone surrender their cryptocurrency access. Named after the idea of using a wrench to obtain crypto keys, these attacks are becoming more frequent globally. TRM Labs has reported several incidents since the beginning of the year.
CertiK, a crypto security firm, recorded a 41% rise in verified incidents in early 2026, with 34 cases reported worldwide. The following months could reach a new high, involving hundreds of millions in losses. Cases include severe incidents like the kidnapping of Ledger co-founder David Balland in France, where attackers sought a €10 million ransom.
Reasons Behind Rising Wrench Attacks
These crimes are on the rise as perpetrators believe they can evade recognition due to cryptocurrency’s traceability challenges. Public displays of crypto wealth attract criminals, while online information gathering aids attackers in identifying and tracking victims.
Investigation Status of Nancy Guthrie’s Case
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31 in her Catalina Foothills home. Authorities found traces of her blood on her porch. The search involves local law enforcement and the FBI. Surveillance footage showing a masked man outside her house the night she disappeared has been released, but no breakthrough has been made.

The investigation into her disappearance continues. Anyone with information is urged to contact relevant authorities, including the FBI, at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324), 520-351-4900, or 88-CRIME, or visit tips.fbi.gov.
