Primary Elections Highlight Political Shifts and Innovations
Washington, D.C. (AP) – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani actively participated in the Democratic U.S. House primaries, supporting three allies over candidates backed by the establishment. All three allies won, defeating two incumbents and assuring the election of two democratic socialists to Congress from strongly Democratic districts.
Mamdani emphasized the need for “better Democrats” who prioritize working people’s interests. Although some Democratic leaders expressed concern, Mamdani’s influence was evident. Elsewhere, AI industry factions spent substantial sums in a House race about tech regulation. President Trump avoided past mistakes in endorsements, ensuring victory for his chosen candidate in a South Carolina runoff.
In the race for the seat vacated by retiring U.S. Rep. Nydia Velázquez, state Assembly Member Claire Valdez, supported by Mamdani, defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, endorsed by Velázquez. Democratic U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat lost reelection to Darializa Avila Chevalier, another Mamdani-backed socialist. Avila Chevalier organized protests related to Palestine at Columbia University.
A third candidate backed by Mamdani, former city comptroller Brad Lander, defeated U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman with a focus on the Gaza conflict. Lander criticized Goldman for his stance on Israel. As all three victors are expected to win their districts, Mamdani’s allies are poised for Congress.
AI Regulation Conflict in Manhattan
A Democratic primary in Manhattan turned into a proxy battle between AI industry factions due to candidate New York Assemblyman Alex Bores, renowned for ethics concerns and advocacy for state-level AI regulation. Micah Lasher, endorsed by Democratic leaders, emerged victorious. OpenAI investors funded attacks on Bores, prompting counter efforts supporting him.
During a debate, Lasher accused Bores of alignment with influential tech players. Competitors included Jack Schlossberg and George Conway. The AI regulation issue remains unresolved.
Trump’s Endorsement Strategy in South Carolina
After losing endorsements in governors’ races, Trump strategically endorsed South Carolina’s Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and Attorney General Alan Wilson for governor, ensuring his influence. Wilson won the runoff.
Wilson expressed gratitude to Trump for recognizing his campaign’s vigor. Trump’s endorsement played a critical role in Wilson’s victory.
Utah’s Democratic Battleground
Unusually, Utah’s Democratic primaries garnered attention. Redistricting formed a Democratic hub in Salt Lake City, creating competition for progressive positioning. Former U.S. Rep. Ben McAdams, victor, aligned with the district’s liberal tone, advocating abortion rights. State Sen. Nate Blouin, backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, contested McAdams.
Maryland’s Republican Prospects
As former Republican Governor Larry Hogan exited, Maryland Democrats championed Governor Wes Moore for reelection. Republicans backed Dan Cox, a Trump supporter, focused on tax cuts and housing affordability.
The story has been corrected, indicating Moore assumed office in 2023.
