Prince Harry has shifted from praising the United States to criticizing the policies of Donald Trump’s administration since Trump’s re-election. His focus has also turned to rebuilding ties with Britain. In April 2024, Newsweek reported that Harry officially changed his residence from Britain to the U.S., considering American citizenship earlier that year. However, in 2025, he stated he had no plans to become a U.S. citizen and expressed criticism of Trump’s foreign policy, specifically America’s role in Ukraine’s conflict with Russia.
Why It Matters
Previously, Harry described America as a refuge after leaving the monarchy, moving to California in March 2020. Lately, his tone has shifted, leading to speculation about a possible return to Britain. In an essay, he referred to America as his “current” home, raising questions about his future intentions.
Harry’s Praise for America Before Trump’s Victory
Before Trump’s return, Harry spoke positively about the U.S. In an April 2022 interview on Today, he described America as his home and praised the warm welcome in Santa Barbara. By February 2024 on Good Morning America, he expressed his enjoyment of U.S. life, although American citizenship was not a priority.
In his book Spare, published in January 2023, Harry recalled a 2016 visit to America where he appreciated the directness of Americans compared to British reservation. However, in 2020, before the U.S. election, he urged Americans to reject hate speech, interpreted as a critique of Trump.
Criticism Following Trump’s Election
Since Trump’s November 2024 victory, Harry’s comments have become critical. At the 2026 Kyiv Security Forum, he emphasized America’s obligation to support Ukraine, highlighting international treaty obligations. He suggested that Ukraine had earned global respect.
In December 2025, on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Harry joked about Americans being obsessed with royalty, subtly critiquing Trump. In a prank call in 2020, he criticized Trump’s coal industry policies, reflecting his critical engagement with American politics.
Renewed Praise for Britain
Harry’s recent comments on Britain have been positive. In a November 2025 essay, he stated Britain as his proud homeland, despite living in the U.S. His use of “currently” sparked media speculation about his potential return. Safety concerns for his family in Britain remain, pending the reinstatement of his Metropolitan Police protection.
This summer, Harry’s return to Britain for the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham presents another opportunity to explore his relationship with his homeland. His recent remarks suggest America has become more scrutinized, while Britain retains an emotional significance in his narrative.
