Rachel Ward, known for her role in “The Thorn Birds,” shared insights on leaving Hollywood to become a farmer in Australia. Born into a British aristocratic family, Ward’s successful modeling career led her from London to Los Angeles in the 1980s, aiming to pursue acting.
On “Australian Story,” Ward expressed disillusionment with Hollywood, describing it as superficial and uninspiring. She aspired to emulate actress Julie Christie, known for roles focused on romance. However, Ward found that female actors in LA were often valued for their appearance rather than talent, focusing on sexuality.
Ward rose to fame with her role in the 1983 miniseries “The Thorn Birds,” alongside stars Richard Chamberlain, Barbara Stanwyck, and Christopher Plummer. The series earned numerous award nominations. During filming, she met Australian actor Bryan Brown, and the couple married in 1983.
After marriage, Ward and Brown relocated to an 865-acre farm in New South Wales, Australia. Initially balancing life between America and Australia, having children shifted her priorities towards settling there.
Beyond acting, Ward embraced filmmaking, debuting as a director in 2009 with “Beautiful Kate.” The devastating Australian bushfires between 2019-2020 deeply impacted her, intensifying her climate change concerns and leading to depression.
Ward struggled with direction, feeling a lack of purpose. After the fires, she shifted to regenerative farming, a change inspired by the environment and personal growth. This practice focuses on sustainability and soil restoration.
In 2023, Ward created a documentary, “Rachel’s Farm,” detailing sustainable agriculture. Her hands-on approach to farming brought her vitality and control.
Despite facing criticism for her appearance, Ward embraced her age and natural look, advocating for acceptance of aging. She prioritized her farming achievements over public perception of her image.
In recent interviews, Ward emphasized her indifference to age-related stereotypes, focusing instead on her accomplishments in farming.
