Reconnect with Nature: A Simple Summer Challenge
Welcome to the start of a summer challenge designed to help you disconnect from screens and reconnect with the world around you. This June, we invite you to “touch grass” by putting down your phone and immersing yourself in nature.
Why Go Outside?
Many of us spend significant hours indoors, glued to our devices. Over half of U.S. adults admit to excessive screen time. Research reveals that we spend about 90% of our time inside.
Dr. John La Puma, author of “Indoor Epidemic,” terms these indoor screen episodes as “ultraprocessed time.” He argues that much like ultraprocessed foods, this time provides convenience and stimulation but lacks nourishment.
Interacting with nature, even briefly, offers substantial health benefits. Studies show spending time outside reduces stress, improves mood, and boosts focus and memory.
How to Participate
Your task is to integrate 20 minutes of nature into your daily routine throughout June. A pivotal study involving nearly 20,000 participants highlighted that those spending at least 120 minutes in nature weekly reported higher health and well-being levels. Consider accessing a nearby park or even a tree-lined street. Nature is all around us.
Daily Implementation
Start by checking your schedule each morning. Manoush Zomorodi, author of “Body Electric,” suggests finding two 10-minute or a single 20-minute window for outdoor time. Choose a morning stroll, tuning into birdsong or urban nature like ivy or dandelions.
For those struggling to allocate these minutes, compare it to your phone usage. Understand where your time goes. If screen time surprises you, redirect some of that to nature.
Minimize Distractions
If possible, leave your phone behind as you explore nature. Experiencing green spaces without devices amplifies health benefits, say experts. If having a phone is necessary, keep it turned off.
Short trips to a porch, fire escape, or backyard are beneficial too. Dr. La Puma reminds us that even a small patch of sky can make a difference.
Marc Berman, an environmental neuroscientist, emphasizes how nature’s “soft fascination” gently captivates your mind, promoting reflection. Watch leaves dance or listen to water; these moments offer mental clarity.
Reflect and Share
Commit to this habit through June. Notice how incorporating more “greens” into your routine changes your stress levels, physical health, or mental state. Share your experiences in the comments.
Summer urges us to break free from screens. Let’s step outside and rejuvenate our senses.
Join our summer challenge and commit to 20 minutes of screen-free time daily. Congrats to everyone pledging their time for better health!
