The UK government plans to release a second set of documents concerning Peter Mandelson’s appointment as the U.S. ambassador. Mandelson, previously removed from his post due to links with Jeffrey Epstein, is at the center of a political storm affecting Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Mandelson was dismissed last September after leaked emails revealed his close relationship with Epstein, a convicted sex offender. This sparked a significant political crisis in the UK.
Documents released in March, which were requested by opposition lawmakers, showed that officials advised against granting high-security clearance to Mandelson. Nonetheless, the Foreign Office ignored this advice when appointing Mandelson as the top envoy to the U.S.
Starmer claims Mandelson misled him about his connection with Epstein and that he was uninformed about the security clearance concerns. The scandal led to the dismissal of Olly Robbins, the former head of the Foreign Office, in April, putting Starmer’s leadership under threat.
Starmer’s challenges grew with recent poor local election results and the resignation of cabinet minister Wes Streeting. This raised the possibility of a leadership challenge later in the year. Andy Burnham, a leading candidate and mayor of Manchester, is vying to return to Parliament through a special election. His success would enable him to contest the Labour leadership.
The forthcoming release will contain communications from Mandelson’s term as ambassador, starting in February 2025 and ending with his dismissal that September. These include emails and messages shared with senior government members.
Mandelson faces a criminal investigation for potential misconduct in public office due to claims of passing confidential information to Epstein during a prior government role in 2009 and 2010. Although arrested and released on bail in February, Mandelson has not been charged and has denied any illegal activity.
The government, under pressure from opposition, has committed to releasing all pertinent documents, except those the police have requested to withhold for their investigation. Some documents will have redactions for national security or international relations reasons, or to protect the identities of junior officials.
