Mike Ditka, known for his enduring influence on football, has passed away at the age of 86. Though he retired from coaching in the NFL in 1999, his impact remains significant. Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell and Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh shared remarkable anecdotes about the legendary Chicago Bears figure.
Dan Campbell’s Encounter with Ditka
Campbell spoke about learning of Ditka’s death during a news conference, recalling his first interaction with the Hall of Fame tight end. Growing up, Campbell admired Ditka and felt a strong connection when the Saints expressed interest in meeting him at the NFL Combine.
“I got a great Ditka story. Somebody I admired growing up. Ditka was it. Huge fan,” Campbell said.
The meeting was intimidating yet memorable. Campbell described the setting as eerie, with a single lamp lighting the room and smoke filling the air from Ditka’s cigar.
Campbell cherished the thought-provoking questions Ditka posed about Campbell’s upbringing and thinking style. He fondly remembered the meeting as one of the significant experiences of his life, offering thoughts and prayers to Ditka’s family while honoring him as a legend.
Jim Harbaugh on Ditka’s Generosity
Jim Harbaugh recalled Ditka drafting him in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft. During game plan discussions, Harbaugh witnessed Ditka taking time to write checks for people in need based on letters he received.
“Then I finally said, ‘Hey, what are you doing, coach?’ And he said he had gotten a letter, a stack of letters, and was writing $500 checks to those people.” Harbaugh recounted.
Harbaugh noted Ditka’s acts of kindness remained private, calling him a “great man.”
Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’s Tribute
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson extended condolences to Ditka’s family, acknowledging Ditka as a gold standard for the Bears organization.
“Coach Ditka is the gold standard in terms of this place. He’s a legend here. As a player, as a coach, his impact is still felt,” Johnson stated.
Johnson expressed humility sitting in the same “chair” that Ditka once occupied and remarked on the coach’s ongoing influence.
Several other NFL coaches also began their news conferences by acknowledging the loss and offering sympathies.
Ditka’s Lasting Legacy
Ditka was instrumental in revolutionizing the tight end position after getting drafted by the Bears in 1961. He became the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Ditka led teams to Super Bowl victories as a player and assistant coach with the Dallas Cowboys and as head coach of the Bears.
His illustrious career and the stories shared by other coaches underscore his enduring legacy in football history.
