In La Guaira, Venezuela, local and international rescue teams are striving tirelessly to rescue survivors from the rubble caused by two severe earthquakes. As of Sunday afternoon, government officials reported 1,450 deaths, prompting criticism about the adequacy of their response. Thousands remain missing according to databases maintained by families searching for their loved ones.
Despite the dwindling chances of finding survivors, rescuers persistently extract people from debris, offering hope to anxious families. Aid organizations highlight the urgency of the first 48 to 72 hours post-disaster for rescuing individuals alive, although survival possibilities extend if there’s access to food and water.
Sunday morning, U.S. and French rescue teams saved a man and his son from the wreckage, transporting them on a black tarp to an ambulance amidst watching crowds. The rescued individuals were provided hydration via an IV.
By Saturday, the U.N. reported that over 2,200 rescue workers had arrived globally, with more continuing to arrive. Jason Mercano, a civilian involved in rescue operations, communicated with buried family members through social media, emphasizing their unwavering hope: “We’ve never given up hope.”
Tension in Rescue Efforts
On Saturday, Rodríguez announced on state television that over 14,000 military and police personnel are patrolling La Guaira state, where access requires special permits. Many in disaster zones expressed seeing minimal government presence. However, rescue efforts appeared to improve Sunday as compared to previous days.
The devastation offers a formidable challenge for Rodríguez, who assumed office in January following the U.S. removal of former President Nicolás Maduro. Amid Venezuela’s decade-long economic turmoil and political discontent, the disaster exacerbates existing challenges.
Venezuela’s government reported on Sunday that over 770 buildings had fully or partially collapsed, surpassing previous estimates. Community members urgently scoured debris, seeking signs of life and enduring the oppressive heat with masks against the stench of decomposition.
In certain areas, teams managed deceased individuals on the dusty grounds near a hospital parking lot, identifying bodies before transportation. Lacking protective gear, civilians shielded themselves with motorcycle helmets while navigating debris.
Frustration and Desperation
Frustration toward the government’s response was evident when individuals blocked an excavator from leaving a collapse site. This occurred shortly after state workers had posed for photos without rendering assistance. The ruling party’s officials frequently document participation in government-related events via selfies.
The International Organization for Migration highlighted that over 6 million people might be affected, with around 2 million residing in Caracas. Experts attribute the destruction’s severity to the rapid succession of shallow tremors. Smaller aftershocks continue intermittently shaking affected areas including Caracas.
Aid and search teams from several countries, including Mexico, the U.S., Brazil, El Salvador, and France, continue arriving to offer assistance.
A Glimmer of Hope Amid Despair
Images of international aid teams arriving and collaborating amid the debris present a motif of hope. Yonahí Regalado has tirelessly called for her missing sister and nephew, demonstrating the desperation of victims awaiting rescuers. Her resolve captured the sentiment: “If there is anyone alive, let’s get them out.”
Amid the destruction, moments of compassion intertwine with grief and fear. A touching video featured a Venezuelan rescuer reassuring an elderly woman trapped below rubble, vowing to remain by her side.
Simón Bolívar International Airport, serving Caracas, sustained substantial damage. Despite this, a runway remains operative as U.S. teams labor to repair the crucial air pathway for assistance.
