Restaurants Implement Automatic Gratuities Amid World Cup Influx
With the FIFA World Cup drawing international visitors, some restaurants in host cities are adopting automatic gratuities. This measure addresses concerns that guests from countries without a tipping culture might undercompensate workers.
The Missouri Restaurant Association previously suggested Kansas City venues add a 20% automatic gratuity during the soccer tournament. Now, establishments in cities like Atlanta and Philadelphia are doing similarly, according to Food & Wine.
Rationale Behind Automatic Gratuities
Proponents claim the automatic gratuity protects workers dependent on tips and prevents confusion among visitors unfamiliar with U.S. tipping norms. Bob Riekhof, general manager of La Bodega in Kansas City, emphasized that servers will communicate to guests that gratuity is included in their bill.
We’ll have notices on menus and around the restaurant. Communication is key,Riekhof stated.
Ben Fileccia of the Pennsylvania Restaurant & Lodging Association mentioned that these notices help avoid awkward conversations about tipping customs.
Mixed Reactions and Concerns
Some fear that mandatory gratuities might increase consumer frustration over fees. David Henkes from Technomic noted that increased costs could deter customers if not adequately publicized.
Atlanta’s Brewhouse CafĂ© co-owner Michele Bermuvez acknowledged potential pushback but stressed the importance of staff well-being. Others, like Robert Mahon of Mahon Hospitality, oppose automatic tips, advocating for tipping based on service quality instead.
Adapting to Event-Driven Demand
Some businesses are adopting various strategies to handle increased World Cup demand. Mahon’s English pub in New York City offers $6 pints of Guinness, aiming to provide value and attract fans throughout the tournament.
The debate continues over whether automatic charges are necessary to align tipping expectations with cultural differences or if customer service and transparent pricing can suffice to encourage voluntary tips.
The National Restaurant Association was contacted for further comments on this issue.
