A Russian drone, part of an overnight attack on Ukraine, crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two people. This incident has heightened concerns about the war’s spread across NATO borders, according to Romanian authorities.
The drone was monitored by radar as it entered Romanian airspace and struck a building in the city of Galati. The crash set off a fire, causing minor injuries to two individuals and leading to evacuations. Romanian forces dispatched F-16 jets and a helicopter, authorized to engage, but the aircraft did not act against the drone.
Romania has asked NATO to accelerate the transfer of anti-drone systems to its military. The Foreign Ministry condemned the drone’s flight, labeling it a significant breach of international law. This event adds to numerous drone incidents affecting NATO states, prompting strong criticism from Romania’s allies.
Gen. Gheorghe Maxim, acting as the Romanian armed forces’ joint staff commander, clarified that the crash was not an attack on Romania itself, but warned of Russia’s threat to regional security. Galati, where the incident occurred, is near Ukraine and Moldova’s borders.
Ukrainian forces reported downing 217 drones out of 232 launched by Russia, along with one ballistic missile, across 14 regions. While Romania has encountered drone fragments on its territory since the war began in February 2022, this marks the first instance of injuries resulting from such incidents.
In response, Romanian President Nicusor Dan convened the nation’s top defense committee. He described the situation as the most serious incident on Romanian soil since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began, affirming measures against Russia.
Following the defense meeting, Romania declared the Russian consul in Constanta persona non grata and ordered the consulate’s closure. Violations in Romanian airspace have become common, pushing lawmakers to permit the military to down drones as a last resort.
Russia has employed missiles and drones to target Ukraine’s infrastructure, intensifying attacks. This incident highlights ongoing drone issues in Europe, with Ukrainian drones recently straying into Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Since the war’s onset over four years ago, countries including Poland, Croatia, Romania, and Moldova have reported airspace violations with drones found on their lands. These events question air defense readiness along NATO’s eastern border.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressed solidarity with Romania, reaffirming the organization’s commitment to defend its territory. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recognized the incident as a new breach by Russia and indicated further sanctions are being prepared.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna linked the increasing incidents to Russia’s mounting military challenges.
