SAP, the German software giant, is focusing on reinventing jobs rather than eliminating them due to artificial intelligence (A.I.). This approach has sparked debate among experts regarding its effectiveness.
Current Trends
A.I. technology has taken over traditional tasks in many roles at SAP. This includes software engineering tasks like brainstorming, competitor research, and writing and testing code—activities that Fabrizio Primerano used to manage. Despite these changes, Primerano’s role at SAP has not been eliminated. It now involves more creative work and managing A.I. agents, which act like personal assistants and mimic human employees.
“It’s freeing me up to do more creative work,” Primerano shared.
SAP’s Approach
SAP has embraced A.I. technology even though it poses a threat to its coders and business model. The company acknowledges that A.I. is reducing the necessity for human involvement in many engineering tasks. Two years ago, SAP underwent restructuring, leading to nearly 10,000 job cuts, some of which were attributed to A.I. The company, however, did not specify how many jobs were affected directly by A.I.
To offset job eliminations, SAP encourages employees to invent new, valuable positions that leverage A.I. innovations. Despite the previous restructuring, SAP reports a net addition of more than 3,500 jobs since 2023. These include new roles like “forward-deployed engineers,” who work closely with customers to create A.I.-driven solutions.
Christian Klein, SAP’s CEO, conveyed his vision: “I’m not sure if someone, in two or three years, will still code software. We aim to operate with a different type of workforce—not necessarily a smaller one.”
While SAP’s strategy offers a new direction for workforce management in tech companies, there remains a divide among experts about its long-term sustainability.
