Serena Williams of the United States celebrated her return to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships by facing Maya Joint of Australia in the first round of the women’s singles match. The match took place on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at the prestigious tournament in London.
The atmosphere was electric as fans eagerly awaited Williams’ entrance onto Centre Court. The 23-time Grand Slam champion returned to singles play for the first time in nearly four years and received a warm welcome. Despite a three-set defeat against 20-year-old Joint, Williams’ performance was admirable. The 44-year-old was supported by a cheering audience, including her two daughters, as she exited the court with a smile. In a statement released by Wimbledon organizers, Williams expressed her joy at participating once again. She remarked, “The atmosphere was amazing. Walking out was amazing. I definitely relished it and missed it and enjoyed the moment more than anything.”
In the closely contested match, Williams lost 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3, to Joint, showcasing her legendary power with serves clocking above 120 mph. Despite some challenges with movement, Williams dictated play with her strong groundstrokes. Joint, ranked 87th, managed to handle Williams’ pace and capitalized on crucial points by extending beyond Williams’ reach.
Having not played a singles match since the 2022 U.S. Open, Williams returned to singles play at Wimbledon after participating in two doubles matches. The young Joint expressed admiration for Williams, saying, “She has such an aura, she’s just a legend and this court has so many huge names that have played on it.” Joint’s victory marked her first in Wimbledon, contrasting with Williams’ 98 career victories and seven titles at the All England Club.
Williams received wild card entries for singles and doubles, partnering with her sister Venus. The doubles match is yet to come in the week. Williams’ comeback was inspired by her daughters being on break from school. Her youngest daughter, Adira, aged nearly three, watched her play singles for the first time, joined by her eight-year-old sister, Olympia.
The anticipation was palpable as fans cheered Williams’ name and applauded her entrance at Centre Court. Supporters held signs reading “Welcome Back,” while others wore T-shirts stating “Unstoppable Queen.” During the match, Williams executed remarkable plays, including a topspin lob winner and a powerful 121 mph ace to hold a game in the first set.
Williams demonstrated resilience by saving four break points to lead 6-5 in the second set. She saved a match point with a strong serve followed by a forehand winner. Securing the second set with a 122 mph serve to earn her first set point, she calmly celebrated with a fist pump. Joint took advantage in the third set, concluding the match with a forehand that surpassed Williams’ reach, ending the encounter which lasted 2 hours and 22 minutes.
On the same day, other notable players advanced. Top players like Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, Novak Djokovic, French Open champion Alexander Zverev, and defending Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek progressed to the second round. The second-seeded Zverev won against Alexander Blockx while Swiatek overcame Taylor Townsend despite service struggles. Elena Rybakina moved to the next round, defeating Lois Boisson, while fourth-seeded Ben Shelton faced an upset against Otto Virtanen. Additionally, Matteo Berrettini defeated Stan Wawrinka, who plans to retire by the end of the year.
