An 18-year-old student died and three others, including an 11-year-old, were injured in a shooting during a high school graduation event in Northern California. The incident occurred at a graduation ceremony for Sem Yeto High School, held at Fairfield High School.
Fairfield Police Officer Michelle Belyea reported that the victims were aged 11, 20, and 25. The 18-year-old succumbed to injuries sustained during the shooting. The surviving victims are undergoing medical treatment.
“We don’t have any information that there’s any ongoing threat to the community at this time,” Belyea stated.
The police have not yet released details about a suspect. Further updates are anticipated later on Thursday.
Sem Yeto High School is a continuation school in the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic with families gathering after the ceremony. One witness recounted seeing a man start shooting near the area reserved for graduate photos, causing panic and scattering the crowd.
Fairfield Mayor Catherine Moy expressed her condolences to those affected, stating, “My heart is breaking for the students and families involved.” Her remarks reflect her deep connection as a graduate of Fairfield High School and the emotional impact of this event.
Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez offered condolences, acknowledging the lasting impact on the community.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events leading to the tragedy.
