On Tuesday, SpaceX announced its decision to acquire Cursor’s parent company in a significant all-stock transaction. This move supports Elon Musk’s growing interest in artificial intelligence. The acquisition is valued at $60 billion and follows SpaceX’s recent successful public market debut.
In April, SpaceX entered an agreement with Cursor that included an option to purchase the company. SpaceX stated that this setup would help in creating highly efficient AI models. Following SpaceX’s initial public offering last week, where its stock saw significant gains, the company proceeded with the acquisition of Anysphere, Cursor’s parent company. The company’s shares have surged over 5% in premarket trading, pushing Musk to the status of the world’s first trillionaire. SpaceX’s market valuation now stands at approximately $2.5 trillion.
Musk, also at the helm of Tesla, is actively pursuing advancements in AI. He is the founder of xAI, renowned for its Grok chatbot. This AI product competes with leading platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. Earlier this year, SpaceX merged with xAI, setting the merged entity’s valuation at over $1 trillion. Additionally, SpaceX has revealed plans for a massive AI chip manufacturing facility in Texas and secured agreements with both Google and Anthropic for computing resources.
SpaceX has a track record of internal mergers, though it seldom acquires external entities. The acquisition of Cursor is slated to conclude in the third quarter, as per regulatory documentation. Founded in 2022, Cursor quickly gained traction with tech companies adopting its AI tools. The startup received substantial financial backing from major investment entities like Thrive Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and Accel.
When SpaceX first indicated its acquisition intentions in April, Cursor acknowledged that limited access to computing power was constraining its AI model development. Partnership with SpaceX stands to overcome these limitations by leveraging xAI’s robust infrastructure.
