Switzerland Tops Canada in World Cup Match
Switzerland derailed Canada’s World Cup hopes in Vancouver by securing a 2-1 victory. This win granted Switzerland first place in Group B and a week of rest before their next match in the same city. They will face a third-place team from another group on July 2.
After the match, Swiss coach Murat Yakin expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, emphasizing their rightful position. He stated, “In three days, we will know the opponent of the next match, and now we have the possibility to watch this tournament, and to watch the matches, and we will take what we will get.”
Canada, now second in the group, will proceed to the knockout stage for the first time in their history. Originally hoping to continue playing on home soil, they will instead travel to Inglewood, California for their next game on Sunday against the second-place team from Group A. Canadian coach Jesse Marsch noted the opportunity to galvanize fans even from Los Angeles.
In the match on Wednesday, Johan Manzambi of Switzerland impressed after earning a starting spot following his two-goal performance against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Rubén Vargas scored for Switzerland shortly after the second half started, threading the ball past Canada’s goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau. Later, Breel Embolo assisted Manzambi in securing Switzerland’s second goal, bringing up the score to 2-0.
Canada retaliated with a goal from Promise David in the 76th minute but could not equalize before the match concluded. Noteworthy figures such as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani were present at the event.
The first half saw Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka’s free kick sail over the net while Ali Ahmed’s attempt for Canada was saved by Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
Previously, Canada celebrated a 6-0 victory over Qatar, a bittersweet match marred by Ismaël Koné’s injury. He was present at the game against Switzerland on crutches.
Switzerland had commenced the tournament with a draw against Qatar followed by a decisive win over Bosnia. Yakin commented on the tournament experience, highlighting the necessary adjustments for teams. Canada’s push included a 2-2 draw with Bosnia at the start.
Canada’s coach Jesse Marsch praised his team’s perseverance despite challenges like injuries and difficult situations. With noteworthy performances against Qatar, he recognized the potential to advance further with slightly different circumstances.
In another Group B incident, Bosnia defeated Qatar 3-1 potentially positioning them for advancement. Qatar’s losses have resulted in their elimination from the tournament.
