Teen Charged as Adult in Cruise Ship Tragedy
A teenager has been taken into custody for allegedly assaulting and killing his stepsister on a Carnival Cruise ship. Timothy Hudson, now charged as an adult, surrendered on Monday after a reversal of his pretrial release by a federal judge. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Miami confirmed Hudson’s detention.
Charges and Custody
Hudson, 16 at the time, faced charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse of Anna Kepner, aged 18. Previously granted a release to be under electronic monitoring while living with his uncle, Hudson now must remain detained. Initially, the judge had ruled for his release, but the case’s transfer to adult court changed the circumstances. U.S. Magistrate Judge Edwin Torres decided the matter should align with adult proceedings, yet Hudson will stay in a designated juvenile facility.
“The Government has established, by clear and convincing evidence, that no condition or combination of conditions of release will reasonably assure the safety of the community going forward,” wrote Judge Torres.
Details of the Incident
Hudson has entered a plea of not guilty. His defense team remains silent on the case. Authorities prosecuted him federally since the incident occurred in international waters, beyond state jurisdiction. The tragedy unfolded during a November cruise on Carnival Horizon. Kepner traveled with family, including Hudson. Her body was later found concealed under a bed shared with Hudson and another teen. An autopsy confirmed mechanical asphyxia as the cause of death.
Court and Prosecution Arguments
A court hearing on May 27 discussed whether Hudson should remain jailed until trial. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alejandra Lopez contended the seriousness of the alleged crimes should prevent any release, citing the risk of another attack. Evidence suggested Kepner endured a violent struggle before her death. The risk of Hudson fleeing heightened with the possibility of a life sentence. As a minor, charges would have seen his release at 21.
Despite Hudson’s compliance with previous release conditions, his detention was ordered. His legal representatives argued for leniency based on his conduct, but the gravity of charges prevailed.
Family’s Reaction and Memorial
Christopher Kepner, Anna’s father, expressed hope in the justice system for a careful investigation. The family mourns their loss, confronting a painful and complicated situation. Anna Kepner, remembered as a high school cheerleader from Temple Christian School in Florida, was honored at her memorial service. Attendees wore bright colors to celebrate her vibrant spirit, departing from traditional black attire.
