Virtual sex work is not a new concept on television. This year, however, programs like “Euphoria,” “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” and “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed” have brought it to the forefront. These shows explore the complexities and nuances of this type of work in a way that has attracted significant attention.
In HBO’s “Euphoria,” a major character named Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, pursues what she describes as her dreams from her bedroom. She engages in activities such as filming foot fetish videos, creating personalized content, and interacting in various sensual performances. Cassie, now an OnlyFans creator, insists she is not a sex worker but a storyteller using her body, claiming empowerment through her work.
The theme is not unique to “Euphoria.” Characters across other highly regarded shows also participate in digital sex work. For example, Margo (played by Elle Fanning) in “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” engages in cam work to support herself as a young single mother. Similarly, Trevor, a character in “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed,” becomes involved in a criminal intrigue while working as a cam boy.
Even more traditional formats tackle the topic. In HBO’s drama “Industry,” themes of past cam work are interwoven into its plotlines. ABC’s sitcom “Abbott Elementary” humorously touches on this with its character Janine contemplating a side job on a fictional platform called Mostly Fans. Meanwhile, the Canadian series “Cam Boy” continues to explore these themes in its run on OUTtv.
These storylines reflect a broader cultural recognition and treatment of virtual sex work. As television continues to portray these narratives, audiences are offered diverse perspectives on this multifaceted subject.
