NEW YORK – Before a pivotal New York Knicks game, a heated exchange broke out between team owner James Dolan and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The conflict over watch party plans for Madison Square Garden highlighted tensions in the city.
Initially, the NYPD called off a watch party for Game 3 due to a visit by President Donald Trump. Following that, Dolan chose to cancel the planned Game 4 watch party, intended for 1,000 ticketed fans. He cited concerns that only a small number of people could attend, stating, “we’re about millions of people.”
Dolan expressed his frustration in an interview, pointing out the restrictions imposed by city authorities. “This is about celebrating the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, at the Mecca of basketball. This is what the mayor’s office and the commissioner’s office is trying to kill, they don’t want the celebration,” he said.
Mayor Mamdani responded via social media later that day, claiming Madison Square Garden had requested a permit for only 500-999 fans. He stated that Dolan had ultimately decided to cancel the watch party.
“Madison Square Garden and the New York Knicks declined to use the permit that was granted by Mayor Mamdani’s office due to the fact that only 1,000 people would be allowed into the area and they would need to be ticketed, leaving the tens of thousands of people who want to come to The Garden to celebrate the Knicks out in the cold,” a statement from MSG read.
Records showed MSG did receive an option to apply for a permit for more fans. The previous watch party at Bryant Park ended with unruly behavior, a trend during the Knicks’ playoff games. Dolan compared the difficulty of entering Madison Square Garden for the game to accessing “Area 51,” illustrating the heightened security around the event.
Street closures were enforced for the NBA Finals games, reflecting the importance of the events in the city.
