Texas Democratic Primary: Jasmine Crockett’s Stand
In Texas, the name Crockett carries a tradition of making notable last stands. While Davey Crockett made his mark at the Alamo, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, appears prepared to battle James Talarico, who defeated her in the primary, to impede his Senate race success.
This week, Crockett, known for her outspoken nature, expressed uncertainty when asked by the Dallas Morning News about supporting Talarico in the upcoming November elections. Her focus remains on down-ballot races. Despite an invitation, Crockett chose not to speak on behalf of Talarico at the Texas Democratic Party Convention, opting to skip the event entirely.
Crockett’s refusal to endorse Talarico may simply be the reaction of a disappointed candidate, but it poses concerns for Democrats. Her withholding of endorsement eliminates a strategic advantage against GOP Sen. John Cornyn, who similarly refuses to endorse his primary winner, Ken Paxton.
Without Crockett’s backing, Talarico cannot leverage Cornyn’s lack of support as a political weapon against his opponent. This balances out the endorsement stance on both sides.
The larger issue highlighted by Crockett’s stance is the apprehension among Black Democrats regarding their diminishing influence in the party. In cities dominated by Democratic Socialists of America, there’s a shift from long-established Black power to immigrant candidates. This shift is driven by affluent, well-educated White voters, who are typically progressive-leaning.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani held a rally showcasing a slate of congressional candidates, none Black, and opposed by Black Speaker of the House, Hakeem Jeffries, from Brooklyn. Jeffries appears to have lost significant influence over Black political power in the city.
The rally coincided with the inauguration of the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, marking a transition from the old party establishment to a new socialist dynamic.
On CNN, Corey Booker, a Black senator from New Jersey, was shown a clip of Mamdani criticizing the Democrats. Booker chose not to comment on the party, signaling a retreat.
In purple states like Maine and Texas, Democrats favor relatable White candidates for Senate races. Despite scandals, Graham Platner is considered an appealing choice in Maine. In Texas, racial themes dominated the Democratic primary, with one viral clip showing a White voter reluctantly choosing Talarico over Crockett, believing Texas would not support a Black woman candidate.
This voter’s dilemma underscores a contradiction in combating racism while participating in it. Congressional Democrats encouraging the party’s far-left wing might learn from Crockett’s stand. Though politically risky, Crockett prioritizes her principles and her supporters.
Crockett’s focus on down-ballot races indicates her skepticism about the national and Texas Democratic Party acknowledging her supporters. Conversely, Republicans could capitalize on her rebellion by appealing to Black voters who reject far-left agendas and support traditional values.
Davey Crockett didn’t survive the Alamo, and Jasmine Crockett’s political career may face similar challenges post-primary. Yet, the legacy of standing firm remains intact, even if her actions don’t lead to immediate results. Presently, Crockett isn’t surrendering to endorse her rival, presenting a positive scenario for Republicans.
