The 15-Year-Old Keeping War Memories Alive
On the edge of a goat farm in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom lies a unique tribute to the nation’s veterans: Luke’s Military Museum. This modest aluminum trailer is a heartfelt project by its 15-year-old founder, Luke Morrison.
Luke has built an impressive collection of military artifacts and personal war stories. He has talked with hundreds of veterans and continues to seek new stories. His approach is simple. A service cap is often a giveaway, but he also uses instinct. ‘If I’m in the grocery store and I see an older man, I’ll ask, “Were you in the military?” And often, it’s a yes,” Luke shared.
The museum showcases various memorabilia. It includes Tim Bedor’s Iraq war uniform, Vinny Matteis’ Vietnam jump boots, and a Marine pin from Pete Racine, a World War II veteran known for stunt flipping a car at 92. The display lives in an antique camper once owned by Luke’s great-granduncle, Dwight Cooley, a World War II veteran whose photo is prominently featured.
Luke might be the youngest person engaged in preserving this tradition. By collecting veterans’ memories and artifacts, he plays a vital role in understanding the country’s military history. This endeavor is particularly poignant during Veterans Day and Memorial Day, times when the nation reflects on its past conflicts. The insights from these stories matter when contemplating future military engagements.
During a recent tour, Luke spoke of Harry Swett, a local Vietnam veteran. Before passing away, Mr. Swett donated shoulder patches to the museum and shared many stories, recounting both the triumphs and challenges of his service. Such contributions enrich the museum’s narrative, capturing the diverse experiences of those who served.
