The ‘Battlefield’ series has thrilled gamers since its debut in 2002 with its thrilling team-based multiplayer and immersive single-player campaigns. Earlier this year, it was announced that Christopher McQuarrie, known for films like ‘Jack Reacher’ and ‘Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation,’ would direct a film adaptation of this popular video game series. Coincidentally, this movie will go head-to-head with a ‘Call of Duty’ movie, directed by Peter Berg of ‘Lone Survivor’ fame.
There are numerous creative possibilities for a ‘Battlefield’ film. Historically, the game has focused on multiplayer action, with single-player narratives serving more as a backdrop for action-packed gameplay. However, exceptions exist, like ‘Battlefield: Hardline,’ which shifted to a ‘Miami Vice’-style take on The War on Drugs, and other games set in a near-future sci-fi context. Despite these variations, the series remains best known for the ‘modern warfare’ theme evident in popular titles like ‘Battlefield 3’ and ‘Battlefield 4.’
However, another intriguing entry in the franchise is ‘Battlefield: Bad Company.’ Released for PS3 and Xbox 360, this game offered a unique, story-driven experience. It focused on a squad from the 222nd Army Battalion, or ‘B-Company,’ composed of misfits treated as expendable by the military. The game’s approach to war, unlike traditional narratives, leaned towards comedy, echoing films like ‘Dr. Strangelove’ more than ‘Saving Private Ryan.’
‘Bad Company’ offered memorable characters like the player character Preston Marlowe, the mustachioed George ‘Higgs’ Haggard, the nerdy Terrence Sweetwater, and the pragmatic Sergeant Redford. Their journey begins with military orders, but soon transitions into a gold-chasing adventure reminiscent of ‘Three Kings.’
These characters and their comedic tone provide an ideal basis for a ‘Battlefield’ movie that could distinguish itself from ‘Call of Duty.’ The ‘Bad Company’ games are noted for their engaging storytelling, contrasting with the repetitive seriousness found in other entries in the ‘Battlefield’ series. The potential film could embrace the absurd in-game antics familiar to ‘Battlefield’ players, capturing them as cinematic spectacles.
As the ‘Battlefield’ movie enters development, it’s bound to compete with Peter Berg’s ‘Call of Duty’ film. Unlike ‘Call of Duty,’ ‘Battlefield’ lacks extensive connected lore and iconic recurring characters. The anecdotal humor from ‘Bad Company’ could be the needed element to differentiate it. With its unique characters and style, a film centered around ‘Bad Company’ could offer a refreshing take on video game adaptations, showcasing a blend of action and humor.
