The buildup to the World Cup has become more turbulent for Iran as the national soccer federation reported that FIFA canceled the ticket allocation for Iranian fans at the team’s three group-stage matches in the United States. Each participating team typically receives 8% of a stadium’s capacity in tickets, which are then distributed to their most loyal supporters. These tickets were supposed to be available after the tournament draw in December, but Iranians were already facing a U.S. travel ban by then.
Iran is set to face New Zealand on June 15 at the Los Angeles Rams’ 70,000-capacity stadium in Inglewood. Iranian officials claimed they cannot provide fans any tickets due to the revocation, adding to tensions with FIFA and the U.S. government. While FIFA manages ticketing operations, the Iranian federation accused the U.S. of blocking their supporters’ access to the stadiums.
“This incident raises serious questions about the influence of non-sporting and political considerations on the organization of the world’s biggest football event,” the Iranian soccer federation stated.
FIFA assured in a statement that it is collaborating with Iran’s football federation to find solutions enabling Iranian supporters to attend matches. Meetings with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and other officials in Turkey have taken place to offer logistical assistance.
Challenges Facing Iranian Team
Iran’s path to the World Cup has been rough. Most of the team hasn’t played competitively since February, as the domestic league was suspended due to war. The team’s training was relocated from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico. This World Cup marks Iran’s seventh appearance in the tournament.
Some Iranian officials were denied U.S. visas. The Iranian team will enter the U.S. a day before their matches, including games against Belgium and Egypt. Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House FIFA task force, emphasized that while entry might be restricted for some officials, Iranian players would still compete.
“The president wants to ensure a fair competition while restricting access for those tied to the IRGC,” Giuliani mentioned.
As financial sanctions persist, Iranians face visa and payment troubles for traveling to support their team.
Revoked Ticket Allocation
The Iranian football federation announced that due to this unexpected revocation, they cannot offer supporters even a single ticket. FIFA could have just days to redistribute around 5,600 tickets for the Iran-New Zealand game, though the Iranian community in Los Angeles is substantial. Tickets were still available on the FIFA site for $450 each as of Tuesday.
Infantino emphasized the importance of fan accessibility to tournaments during earlier preparations with U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Challenges with U.S. Entry
The entry policies for World Cup visitors have become a heated topic. A Somali referee and an Iraq player faced U.S. entry issues, revealing ongoing disruptions.
“The disruption leads to questions about whether FIFA or U.S. government policies are driving World Cup procedures,” Piara Powar, head of FIFA’s anti-discrimination partner, expressed.
The anticipation surrounding the World Cup continues to focus not only on the sport but on the global stage’s underlying political dynamics.
