Toshifumi Suzuki, a pioneer in the convenience store industry who played a critical role in establishing 7-Eleven as a fundamental part of daily life in Japan, passed away last week due to heart failure. He was 93 years old.
Seven & i Holdings, the Japanese operator of the 7-Eleven franchise where Suzuki served as an honorary adviser, announced his death on Monday.
Building an Empire
During his four decades at the helm of 7-Eleven Japan, Suzuki expanded the company from a single location on Tokyo’s eastern bay to a vast network of tens of thousands of stores. Renowned as a relentless innovator, Suzuki introduced many features that have become synonymous with modern Japanese convenience stores. These include in-store banking and popular snacks like seaweed-wrapped rice balls, which have gained affection both in Japan and internationally.
Since Suzuki’s departure from the company in 2016, 7-Eleven has encountered difficulties in sustaining its momentum. The company has grappled with stagnant profits, a turbulent takeover attempt by a Canadian competitor, and the challenge of enlisting new leadership to reignite growth. Some within the organization feel that the culture of innovation diminished following Suzuki’s resignation.
Early Career and Vision
Born in the Nagano Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo, Suzuki initially worked in publishing sales. He was personally recruited by Masatoshi Ito, the founder of Ito-Yokado, a prominent Japanese retail chain. Joining the company, Suzuki became a director in 1971.
A few years later, Suzuki observed an American convenience store chain named 7-Eleven, operated by the Southland Corporation based in Dallas. He recognized the potential to introduce the concept to Japan. At that time, many doubted that the American-style convenience stores could compete in a market largely dominated by small, family-operated shops.
