President Donald Trump announced a sudden cancellation of the signing event for the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. He urged the approval of the SAVE Act, emphasizing its importance. Trump stated, “Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency.” This statement appeared on Truth Social.
The House previously approved the Housing Act with a 358–32 vote. The bill aims to increase housing supply and reduce costs, specifically prohibiting large institutional investors from purchasing single-family homes.
On the morning of the announcement, Trump referred to the bill as “a minor matter compared to the SAVE AMERICA ACT.” He criticized it as focusing on issues favored by Elizabeth Warren.
The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act centers on voter ID and citizenship verification.
Following Trump’s announcement, House Speaker Mike Johnson supported the decision. He expressed optimism for an election-integrity proposal through budget reconciliation. Johnson highlighted that citizenship verification is a legal requirement, yet some states fail to comply.
Trump has consistently stressed the urgency of the SAVE America Act. He urged Republicans to back it or consider removing the filibuster to advance related agendas.
The delayed housing package followed extensive negotiations. It included restrictions on private equity housing investments and addressed unrelated proposals concerning central bank digital currencies. The bill aimed to relax regulations on factory-built homes and federal housing reviews. It also encouraged local zoning updates to tackle housing shortages.
Many Americans face challenges in home buying, with median prices above $400,000 as reported by Realtor.com.
