President Donald Trump announced that Bill Pulte will not be his permanent choice for the role of acting director of national intelligence. Trump’s decision came after significant bipartisan opposition due to Pulte’s lack of experience in national security. Senate confirmation is required for the position, and lawmakers signaled a low likelihood of approval if Pulte were nominated.
“He’s not going to be permanent because, you know, I don’t think he’d want to be permanent,” Trump stated during an Oval Office press session. He described Pulte as a “very smart guy” and mentioned his interest in reviewing previous elections that Trump claims were manipulated against him. Trump added that other candidates are being considered for the role. “We’re interviewing people right now,” he commented.
Pulte, the grandson of PulteGroup’s founder, has been a controversial figure in the administration. His tenure as the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency involved oversight of mortgage companies, such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Controversy arose from his pursuit of Trump’s political adversaries for alleged mortgage fraud and his vocal criticisms of former Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. Pulte’s proposal for a 50-year mortgage met backlash, as it could hinder wealth building through homeownership.
Concerns over Pulte’s lack of national security experience were voiced by both Republican and Democratic senators. Coordinating 18 federal agencies responsible for domestic and international security is a task seen as requiring specialized expertise. Senate Majority Leader John Thune emphasized that the position should be occupied by professionals, not politicized.
Prominent Republican senators, soon to retire, expressed apprehensions about Pulte filling the role. Democratic senators, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, urged Trump to reconsider Pulte’s appointment, even temporarily. Warren cautioned that Americans might distrust Pulte’s capability to safeguard the nation and handle sensitive information responsibly.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent highlighted internal tensions, indicating he would oppose Pulte’s actions in 2025. Despite the controversies, Pulte maintains a close relationship with Trump, frequently traveling on Air Force One. “He’s a person who’s got high integrity,” Trump remarked regarding Pulte.
