President Donald Trump introduced a newly refurbished presidential aircraft at Joint Base Andrews on Friday. The aircraft boasts a larger size, luxurious amenities, and a red, white, and blue paint scheme. This is part of the Air Force’s preparations as they ready the jet for service.
The aircraft, a Boeing 747-8i donated by the government of Qatar, has been modified for presidential use. It will serve as an interim Air Force One while Boeing completes two delayed VC-25B replacement aircraft. Trump, standing with Air Force leaders and service members, highlighted the aircraft’s noticeable size difference. “The biggest difference is the difference in size. It’s like virtually double the size,” Trump said.
Paint Scheme and Initial Flights
The Air Force announced that the aircraft would soon begin commissioning flights, marking the final phase of testing before it enters operational service. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink emphasized the importance of the aircraft’s safety and security, stating, “The safety and security of the commander in chief is our highest priority.” Every requirement was meticulously evaluated to accelerate delivery while maintaining high standards.
Trump expressed satisfaction with the new aircraft’s acquisition, citing frustration with Boeing’s delayed replacement program and outdated U.S. presidential aircraft. He noted, “I asked the Emir if we could use the brand new 747.” Highlighting the current fleet’s age, Trump mentioned, “Our country has to be represented properly.”
Design and Future Plans
The aircraft features Trump’s preferred red, white, and dark blue color scheme, replacing the light blue-and-white design that defined presidential aircraft since the Kennedy era. The Air Force will use this design as the standard for the presidential and executive airlift fleet, including the VC-25Bs under development.
Trump praised the aircraft’s interior, calling it “considered the world’s most luxurious plane.” He hinted the aircraft might feature prominently in the America 250 celebration next year, particularly during a July 4 flyover in Washington. This display could include F-22s, F-35s, and other military aircraft.
Preparation and Transition
The Pentagon accepted the Qatari aircraft last year and has spent months readying it for presidential service. Officials say the process moved quickly compared to the broader Air Force One replacement due to fewer required interior modifications for this aircraft. The jet will serve until Boeing delivers two next-generation Air Force One aircraft, expected in about two years.
Trump acknowledged the efforts of over 250 personnel involved in preparing the aircraft for service. He cited the project as an example of modernizing a presidential fleet that had lagged behind the more advanced aircraft used by foreign leaders.
