President Donald Trump has initiated a series of campaign events nationwide, aiming to bolster conservative support and counter any potential Democratic surge in the upcoming midterm elections. On October 27, he plans to return to Texas to assist Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in a closely contested race, which remains too close for Democrats to confidently predict a victory.
Despite criticism that Trump’s appearances haven’t significantly boosted Republican numbers in key contests, the race between Democratic contender James Talarico and Paxton is notably tight. Talarico, a Texas state representative, has narrowly led in most polls, although Paxton, tarnished by past legal issues including a 2023 impeachment and acquittal as well as 2024 securities fraud charges, shows resilience in polling.
Some Republican operatives express concern that Trump’s involvement could adversely affect their candidates. His approval ratings have declined, with voters discontent over issues such as gas prices, living costs, and ongoing conflicts. However, in Texas, traditionally a Republican stronghold, Trump’s presence—highlighted by an unprecedented Republican National Convention midterms event in Dallas—has not evidently harmed Paxton’s standing.
Nick Maddux, senior adviser to Paxton, emphasized their focus on maintaining a majority, stating that Paxton is actively engaging with Texans, fundraising, and conveying his campaign message directly to voters.
AG Paxton is thankful for the support and knows how important Texas is to keeping the majority,Maddux remarked to Newsweek.
Polls surrounding Trump’s rallies indicate a narrowing race. Surveys conducted by various pollsters before and after the Dallas convention and the San Antonio rally suggest that both the rallies and a late advertising push could have contributed to the shift. Trump asserted the impact of his rallies, stating that they have changed the dynamics in favor of Paxton.
Specific polling data show subtle fluctuations. For example, a significant event in San Antonio appears to have sparked a tighter race, with some polls indicating a reduction in Talarico’s lead following the rally. Analyses reveal a general shift of approximately 2.4 points toward Paxton after Trump’s involvement in the state.
The Significance of the Texas Senate Race in 2026
Texas poses a critical opportunity for Democrats who aim to flip the Senate majority by defending all current seats and winning additional Republican-held seats. Should Paxton secure victory, despite the uphill battle, it would maintain Texas’s longstanding Republican preference since Lloyd Bentsen’s Democratic win in 1988.
Early voting is underway, ending on October 30, preluding the November 3 election. The Cook Political Report has rated the Texas race as a ‘Toss Up’, marking its competitiveness.
Upcoming Campaign Stops and Fundraising Dynamics
The Republican National Committee has announced campaign visits to Lubbock and Waco. These areas showed strong support for Trump in the 2024 elections. The focus is on mobilizing the party base as actions during the midterms could significantly influence the results.
Despite Trump’s support, Paxton’s campaign has faced fundraising challenges. Talarico reported a record-breaking $64 million raised in the third quarter alone, significantly outpacing Paxton’s $18 million. A substantial portion of Talarico’s donations is small contributions under $100, contrasting with higher-value donations Paxton received, including notable contributions from figures like Elon Musk. Musk’s donations have also fueled pro-Paxton and anti-Talarico advertisements through powerful super PACs.
This competitive fundraising landscape highlights the strategic importance of this race, as it affects not only the immediate candidates but broader political dynamics in the region.
