The United States has started to reroute travelers from the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Uganda to specific airports for enhanced health screenings. This measure aims to identify individuals potentially exposed to the Ebola virus.
John F. Kennedy International Airport will initiate virus screenings after 11:59 p.m. Thursday. It becomes the fourth U.S. airport to conduct these screenings since the Ebola outbreak began. Other airports conducting checks include Washington Dulles International Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that Kennedy Airport has experience conducting similar checks during other health crises. Operational procedures are in place for these screenings. All travelers arriving from affected regions might undergo checks, regardless of their immigration or citizenship status. U.S. Customs and Border Protection revealed these plans for J.F.K. Airport earlier this week.
The Ebola outbreak is thought to have resulted in over 1,000 cases and more than 200 deaths thus far. Public health experts point out that the closure of the U.S. Agency for International Development last year left detection and response efforts unprepared and lacking funds, enabling the outbreak to spread rapidly.
The Trump administration has committed to preventing Ebola from entering the United States. Measures include denying entry to affected American citizens. On Thursday, senior administration officials shared plans for a 50-bed quarantine center in Kenya for Americans exposed to the virus. Adjacent facilities will isolate those who test positive or display symptoms while in quarantine. The quarantine center is set to open on Friday. The timeline for the isolation and biocontainment facilities remains unclear.
The CDC and State Department are also working to find enhanced treatment facilities in Europe for Americans needing advanced care for Ebola, as stated by officials.
