Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed a harrowing incident during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. A cockpit attack threatened the safety of many passengers, but swift action turned a potential disaster into a story of heroism.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Netanyahu detailed how passengers aboard the FlyDubai flight displayed exceptional bravery. He highlighted Yaniv Chayon, who infiltrated the cockpit and subdued the attacker, preventing what Netanyahu described as a looming catastrophe. The prime minister emphasized the young man’s valor as he saved numerous lives amidst chaos.
“The passengers, including 30 children, were resigned to their fate, praying in despair,” Netanyahu told ‘Hannity.’ “Yet, this courageous young man intervened, acting with incredible heroism to avert disaster.”
The incident involved a pilot who allegedly attacked a fellow crew member in an attempt to crash the plane carrying more than 100 people. Authorities suspect the act as a hijacking. The wounded captain unlocked the cockpit door. Passengers joined forces to subdue the attacker and stabilize the descending aircraft.
Netanyahu met with Yaniv Chayon earlier and expressed admiration for his decisive actions. The prime minister recounted his conversation with Chayon, who simply stated, “I just had to do it,” when asked about his courageous move.
Netanyahu attributed the attack to antisemitic hatred, describing the assailant’s motives as rooted in fanaticism. He noted the severe violence seen globally, highlighting a disturbing rise in antisemitic incidents.
Despite injuries incurred by Capt. Smit Machchhar, the pilots aboard successfully landed the aircraft after a sudden drop in altitude. The prime minister noted Machchhar’s fight for survival following severe injuries sustained during the attack.
An Israeli official identified the alleged attacker as an Omani national. FlyDubai announced suspensions of flights to and from Israel during investigations. Israeli investigators aim to comprehend the co-pilot’s motive and ascertain sole involvement in the incident.
Netanyahu remarked on the resilience of those aboard. “Think about it,” he stated, “if you’re next hijacked, make sure an Israeli is sitting next to you.”
