The results of California’s primary elections, including significant races like the governor and Los Angeles mayoral contests, remain unresolved. As of Thursday morning, Republican candidate Steve Hilton leads the gubernatorial race with approximately 28% of the vote. Trailing him are major Democratic contenders, former Biden official Xavier Becerra at 25% and billionaire Tom Steyer with 20%.
The Los Angeles mayoral election also remains too tight to call. Incumbent Mayor Karen Bass has secured a place in the November election, but challenger Spencer Pratt, who was in second place with 30% of the vote on Wednesday morning, continues to face competition from other candidates like left-wing candidate Nithya Raman, who holds 22%.
California’s election law allows only the top two candidates from any state primary to advance to the general election, irrespective of their political affiliation. Candidates made final appeals to voters over the past weekend, leading up to the election.
Spencer Pratt stated, “I’m an Angeleno who said, ‘Enough is enough,’ and I had to step up. I’m going to show everybody that I’m their mayor.” He emphasized inclusivity across party lines for residents seeking a basic quality of life.
California’s extended vote-counting process has been criticized, notably for its reliance on mail voting and extensive verification. Under state law, every registered voter is mailed a ballot, and votes are counted if they arrive within a week past election day, provided they are postmarked by election day.
This system often results in prolonged delays in declaring outcomes, particularly in close races. Political analyst Nate Silver commented on the extended counting process, calling it “kind of insane,” and noted how such delays are uncommon compared to other global electoral systems. He described this as a “textbook example of learned helplessness.”
In these tight primaries, the wait to determine who advances to the general election underscores this lengthy process. Representative Kevin Kiley criticized California’s handling of its election processes, noting the state’s inability to manage the basic administration of democracy.
