Upcoming Social Security Payments and Anticipated COLA Adjustment
Millions of Americans are scheduled to receive their Social Security payments this week. Some retirees could receive checks amounting up to $5,181. This comes ahead of a significant announcement regarding the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), expected to be made on Wednesday. The COLA will determine the increase in benefits for 2027.
Expectations suggest the increase will exceed the previous 2.8 percent adjustment, implemented this year. Current forecasts predict a rise between 3.5 and 3.6 percent. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will distribute October payments on Wednesday, October 14, to beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of any month.
Payments are typically organized according to the recipient’s birthdate. This schedule applies to those who began receiving benefits after April 30, 1997. For those who started before May 1997 or receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), payments are issued on the third of the month. SSI payments for October were made on October 1.
If a recipient does not receive their payment on the expected date, the SSA advises waiting three mailing days before contacting them.
Understanding Recipient Payments
The Social Security benefit amount varies based on several factors:
- Lifetime earnings
- Age at which retirement benefits are claimed
- Work history
The maximum monthly retirement benefits for workers claiming in 2026 depend on whether they earned the maximum taxable earnings from age 22. The average monthly benefit currently stands at $2,087.52.
COLA Announcement on the Horizon
Beneficiaries eagerly await the Wednesday announcement concerning the 2027 COLA. This adjustment is necessary to offset inflation increases for 2027.
The COLA calculation involves the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). It compares inflation from July, August, and September against the same period from the preceding year.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics will publish September’s inflation figures at 8:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday, October 14, followed by the SSA’s COLA announcement. This year could see the largest percentage increase since post-COVID-19 inflation hike.
AARP predicts a 3.6 percent increase, while The Senior Citizens League estimates 3.5 percent. Both exceed the 2.8 percent increase in 2026 and the 2.5 percent adjustment in 2025.
For those receiving an average retired-worker benefit of $2,086 in July, a 3.5 percent increase results in an additional $73 monthly, raising it to approximately $2,159. A 3.6 percent rise leads to an increase of about $75, adjusting the payment to $2,161 monthly. The final increase depends on the actual COLA and each recipient’s benefit.
This would be the largest increase since the 8.7 percent adjustment in January 2023, during heightened inflation. That adjustment followed by a 3.2 percent increase in 2024.
The annual adjustment is crucial for retirees and individuals with disabilities who depend on Social Security for essential expenses. A higher COLA also indicates elevated inflation, suggesting potential ongoing challenges with living costs despite increased monthly benefits.
The new adjustment becomes effective with benefits payable in January 2027.
