Interior Secretary Doug Burgum discussed the vandalism of the National Mall’s Reflecting Pool on “The Katie Miller Podcast.” The podcast host, Katie Miller, is the wife of President Donald Trump’s advisor Stephen Miller. She questioned how such vandalism occurred with so many cameras around.
Burgum explained that, initially, there were few or no cameras monitoring the pool. The Reflecting Pool is part of the Lincoln Memorial, and according to Burgum, it had never been vandalized before President Trump’s recent efforts to beautify it.
Miller noted that Trump’s actions may have made the pool a target. Burgum agreed, mentioning that others began to see it as a point of attack after Trump’s initiative.
Burgum shared that they have since installed mobile camera stations and towers, capturing secondary activities. They first noticed vandalism on June 9, but refrained from publicizing it to avoid encouraging copycat incidents. Camera coverage has been enhanced since then.
In her interview with Burgum, which will release at 6 p.m. ET, Miller delves deeper into the vandalism topic, including the early detection efforts.
As federal officials prepare for America’s 250th anniversary, vandalism has increased across Washington, D.C. Vandals marked the National Mall with multiple “8647” references, wrote messages in blood on the Washington Monument, and damaged the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. These actions followed President Trump’s directive to repaint the Reflecting Pool, prompting backlash.
Officials observed that protesters cut wires and fences, discarding them into the water. In response, security measures have intensified to guard against further incidents.
