Qatar has accused Iran of attacking a Qatari-flagged liquefied natural gas tanker near the Strait of Hormuz. Qatar claims that Iran’s actions jeopardize safe maritime passage and violate international law.
A Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, stated on social media, “We demand that the Islamic Republic of Iran immediately cease all practices that undermine regional security or threaten the safety of international maritime navigation.” Qatar holds Iran fully responsible for the attack and any resulting consequences.
The incident occurred as large crowds attended the funeral of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has not claimed responsibility for the attack.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, linked to the British Royal Navy, reported a tanker being struck by a projectile off the coast of Oman, igniting a fire onboard.
Iranian state media reported that the Qatari vessel was targeted after ignoring warnings. Iran argues for maintaining control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil and gas flow. These strikes have led to skirmishes between Iranian and U.S. forces.
In related news, the U.S. Central Command announced a series of strikes against Iranian targets after Iran attacked commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. aims to “impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping.”
The Trump administration has also expressed concern about China’s launch of an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile, accusing Beijing of escalating nuclear proliferation.
Meanwhile, a commercial tanker caught fire after being hit by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, with the British military noting no casualties or environmental impacts.
The defense world features several events, including a conference hosted by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and discussions on U.S. Middle East policy and Ethiopian human rights issues.
