Veteran News Anchor Bill Ritter Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease
Bill Ritter Announces Alzheimer’s Diagnosis
Bill Ritter, a seasoned news anchor in New York, announced his diagnosis of early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Ritter has been a pivotal figure at WABC-TV for over two decades, anchoring the station’s 6 p.m. newscast since 2001. On a recent broadcast, he shared with viewers that he would be stepping away from the anchor desk.
“After a series of tests, my doctors have told me I have Alzheimer’s,” Ritter said during the broadcast.
Despite the diagnosis, he noted that current treatments are temporarily managing the disease, though a cure remains undiscovered.
Career Highlights of Bill Ritter
Ritter’s journalistic journey is extensive. He joined WABC-TV in 1998, following significant roles at the Los Angeles Times, various California television stations, and ABC News. In 1999, he began anchoring the 11 p.m. Eyewitness News broadcast and took over the flagship 6 p.m. newscast in 2001. Over the years, he also anchored the 5 p.m. broadcast.
Ritter will remain at the station, focusing on reporting about Alzheimer’s and other neurological conditions, their effects, and available resources for patients and families.
Reactions to Ritter’s Announcement
WABC-TV General Manager Marilu Galvez commended Ritter’s dedication and integrity. She emphasized that while he transitions from daily anchoring, he remains an essential part of the ABC7 family. His future role includes providing updates and resources to support those affected by Alzheimer’s.
“Bill is strong, brilliant, and resourceful,” Galvez remarked, highlighting his anticipated contributions to Eyewitness News.
Ritter also reflected on personal experiences with the disease, recalling that his father passed away from Alzheimer’s in 1998 after a prolonged struggle.
