Victor Wembanyama secured his first NBA Finals victory, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 115-111 win over the New York Knicks on Monday night. This triumph narrows the Knicks’ lead in the series to 2-1.
Wembanyama stood out with 32 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. His performance reignites hope for the Spurs, who aim to make an unprecedented NBA Finals comeback. Coach Mitch Johnson expressed no surprise at Wembanyama’s strong showing, citing his player’s motivation and skill set.
The defeat marked the Knicks’ first loss in 46 days, snapping their remarkable 13-game winning streak—second-longest in NBA postseason history. New York last lost on April 23 to the Atlanta Hawks. Since then, the Knicks won three games against Atlanta, swept Philadelphia and Cleveland, and claimed the first two games against San Antonio.
The frenzy in New York has seen fans hosting lively watch parties and paying high ticket prices. ‘Knicks In Four’ has become a popular phrase, heard across streets, subways, and offices. Yet, Wembanyama and the Spurs disrupted this momentum during the Knicks’ first home NBA Finals game since 1999.
Wembanyama, reflecting on playing at Madison Square Garden, acknowledged the challenge of competing in such a formidable atmosphere. Knicks coach Mike Brown highlighted the disparity in free throw attempts favoring the Spurs, though he underscored the difficulty of competing against a well-coached team.
Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox made crucial late plays, preventing the Spurs from a dreaded 3-0 series deficit—a recovery no NBA team has achieved. Castle contributed 23 points as the Spurs seek to become the first team to clinch the NBA Finals after losing the initial two home games.
Jalen Brunson scored 32 points, while OG Anunoby added 28 for the Knicks. Fans experienced both excitement and frustration, as security measures led to long lines and premium ticket prices for the long-awaited Finals return to Madison Square Garden.
Despite a costly turnover in Game 2, Wembanyama minimized errors in Game 3, delivering 10 crucial points in the final quarter. This ensured the Spurs held off Brunson’s comeback efforts.
Adding to the night’s drama, President Donald Trump attended and faced crowd disapproval. The Spurs began strongly, with Wembanyama scoring quickly to gain a double-digit lead. Anunoby’s three-pointer later sparked a Knicks rally, culminating in Brunson’s long-range shot that gave them a halftime lead of 64-57.
However, the Spurs reclaimed their lead in the third quarter. Castle’s three-pointer with less than two minutes remaining solidified their advantage. Despite Anunoby’s late three-pointer, Castle’s free throws secured the victory.
The Knicks had dominated throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs, yet their fourth-quarter performance in Game 3 fell short. With notable figures like Derek Jeter and Eli Manning present, Knicks fans hoped for progress towards a third NBA title. Nevertheless, Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges faced challenges, hindering the team’s performance for extended periods.
