VP JD Vance Discusses U.S.-Iran Deal
Vice President JD Vance shared his thoughts with The New York Times’ Ross Douthat, addressing criticisms from pro-Israel factions regarding the U.S.-Iran deal. Vance questioned the approach of Israeli figures like Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, suggesting that Israel, given its size, cannot solve all national security issues through force alone.
The U.S. and Iran have agreed on a new Memorandum of Understanding to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and approach Iran’s nuclear program. Detractors compare it to the Obama-era deal, believing it offers Tehran too many economic concessions without permanent restrictions. Advocates argue it is the most viable option to avoid a Middle East conflict and potential global economic fallout.
Douthat raised concerns about a perceived misalignment between U.S. and Israeli interests. Vance acknowledged Israeli sensitivity but attributed some reactions to misinformation. He emphasized that the deal could benefit the region, including Israel.
Vance cited disagreements within Israel’s political landscape but highlighted that some Israeli leaders, like Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have not publicly condemned the deal. He also referred to Israeli National Security Minister Ben-Gvir’s controversial call for aggressive actions, linking it to recent tensions with Hezbollah.
During a White House event, Vance cautioned Israeli leaders against criticizing a critical ally, pointing to U.S. defense contributions to Israel. He enumerated U.S. achievements, including stalled Iranian nuclear advancements, and urged for continued negotiations.
When questioned about concerns from GOP figures such as Sen. Ted Cruz, Vance challenged critics to propose viable alternatives. He stressed the importance of addressing tangible issues rather than abstract ones, questioning hawkish proposals like large-scale military interventions.
