Smoke from ongoing wildfires in Miami-Dade County continues to rise, affecting the area near Doral and beyond. The fires have persisted since a lightning strike ignited dry brush on June 15. As the holiday weekend approaches, these fires cast a cloud over Juneteenth and threaten to disrupt Father’s Day celebrations.
Wildfire Status
Emergency teams across Florida work tirelessly to manage the situation. Three of the four known wildfires in the region continue to spread. The Well 13 and Quarry 2 fires near Doral are 55% and 80% contained, respectively, having destroyed over 18,000 acres, according to the Florida Forest Service. The Quarry 2 fire caused partial closures of the southbound Turnpike lanes and necessitated evacuations from nearby trailer parks and fishing camps on Krome Avenue. The Coptic blaze in Everglades National Park has consumed 4,000 acres and is less than halfway contained.
Air Quality Impacts
Smoke plumes are drifting north and slightly east, now affecting fewer cities. The worst air pollution was recorded on June 17 but continues to vary with changing wind patterns and fire containment efforts. Despite strong recommendations to evacuate, no new orders have been issued. In Hialeah, air monitoring shows ongoing fluctuation in pollution levels.
Safety Measures Against Smoke
Residents planning outdoor activities during the holiday weekend should monitor air quality, especially if they have respiratory or heart conditions, or live with children or seniors. To minimize exposure while traveling, consider alternative routes to the Turnpike. The Environmental Protection Agency suggests staying indoors as the best defense against smoke. They also advise using N95 or P100 respirators with two head straps for best protection.
