Democratic candidate Xavier Becerra is making strides in the California governor’s race following the primary election. On June 2, Becerra addressed his supporters at La Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Los Angeles, confirming his progress to the November election, according to The Associated Press.
The second candidate to advance remains uncertain amid the state’s unique primary process. This system places all candidates on one ballot, letting any registered voter participate, with the top two advancing to the general election.
An estimated 3.5 million ballots await counting, including mail-in votes postmarked by Election Day, allowed up to seven days after. This rare, wide-open primary has not been seen since the 1990s.
The November winner will govern the most populous state, tackling issues like a significant deficit, high living costs, homelessness, and wildfire threats. Current Governor Gavin Newsom faces term limits and is speculated to run for president in 2028.
Becerra’s campaign, marked by a major comeback, saw a leap from single-digit polling in April to a leading position. As former Health and Human Services secretary under President Biden, Becerra defied expectations. His statement reflected a determination not to bow to external pressures, promising strong engagement in the upcoming election.
Republican Steve Hilton holds an edge for the second spot over Democratic activist Tom Steyer. However, Steyer’s support is growing as counting continues. President Trump endorsed Hilton in April, boosting his standing among Republicans.
Hilton’s British background includes a role as a political adviser to ex-Prime Minister David Cameron. He advocates for shifting the political landscape after 16 years under Democratic governance.
A Hilton win would make Becerra’s victory smoother in a predominantly Democratic state. A Steyer win, however, could lead to an intense and costly internal Democratic contest. Steyer has already invested over $213 million of personal funds in his campaign.
The elections have seen unexpected turns with high-profile Democrats like Kamala Harris, Alex Padilla, and Rob Bonta abstaining from entering the race. The April collapse of Eric Swalwell’s campaign amid scandal benefitted Becerra, reducing concerns among Democrats of an unfavorable primary outcome.
Becerra’s success is partly due to support from political groups independent of his efforts, helping him gain momentum in a potentially challenging political environment.
